Membership Dues
Dear Brothers & Sisters,
Assalamu ‘alaikum.
SBIA’s membership period runs from July 1 – June 30 each year. Membership criteria for participation in the General Body Meetings, voting in elections, and being eligible as a candidate for Director or Trustee are outlined in the SBIA Bylaws.
Pursuant to the bylaws as amended on Dec 13, 2021, the SBIA Board of Directors has amended the membership structure with effect from July 1, 2022.
Requirements for SBIA Membership and Candidacy for Director or Trustee (2022)
All members and candidates must be
A Muslim [Must believe in the unity of Allah (SWT), and the finality of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.]
A US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
A resident of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, or Alameda counties, CA, USA.
Member (To vote in elections)
Between July 1, 2021-June 30, 2022: General Member: $250/person Student: $50/person. Community members who meet the minimum age requirement (16 years) and who are in high school or attending college full-time will be deemed student members. Senior: $50/person. Members who are over 60 years of age are deemed senior members.
To be eligible for nomination for position of Director for Election 2022
Must have contributed in each of these periods: July 1, 2019-June 30, 2020: $1000 or more July 1, 2020-June 30, 2021: $1000 or more July 1, 2021-June 30, 2022: $500 or more
A nominee for director must additionally be: At least 19 years of age at the time of taking office; andAn eligible voting member of SBIA for past 3 years and donated the annual contribution amount requested in Ramadan during the past year towards operations funds, construction, or loan payoff per the table above
To be eligible for nomination for position of Trustee for Election 2020
Must have contributed in each of these periods:
July 1, 2019-June 30, 2020: $1000 or more July 1, 2020-June 30, 2021: $1000 or more July 1, 2021-June 30, 2022: $500 or more
A nominee for trustee must additionally be:At least 25 years of age or older at the time of taking office; andAn eligible voting member of SBIA in good standing for the past 5 years; andSomeone who has served at least one complete term as a Director of the association OR has been a financial contributor to SBIA in the accumulated sum of $5,000 in the past 3 years to operations funds, construction, or loan payoff.
Note:
By default, the SBIA Treasurer will send ballots to those meeting general eligibility requirements ($250 contributed during eligibility period).
Student and Seniors voters list is updated each year during the election cycle.
Students should fill out the voter registration form with proof of age and full time student status
Senior need to submit the voter registration for the first time. Once a senior is on the list, they will stay on the list as long as they pay the annual dues.
The South Bay Islamic Association (SBIA) is one of the oldest Islamic Organizations in The Bay Area. Its headquarters are located in San Jose, CA. SBIA has been providing various services to the community since 1977 including the five daily prayers at two locations (San Jose Downtown, and Harris Way) and Friday prayers at both locations. SBIA has been active in spreading Islam through various Dawah programs and by hosting a number of activities including Weekend Islamic School, Quranic classes for children, Tafseer (English translation and Exegesis) classes for adults, conferences and community get-togethers.
