INGYouth Workshop in the South Bay

Preventing and Addressing Bullying/Harassment/Teasing in School

For Parents and Youth (ages 11-22)

Date: Saturday, January 31, 2015 | 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (including lunch)

Location: South Bay Islamic Association, 2345 Harris Way, San Jose, CA 95131

Adults are challenged to respond to the never-ending bad news and stereotypes of Muslims – but what about young people who are struggling to understand and maintain their identity? According to surveys, 50-70% of Muslim children suffer from teasing leading to bullying in relation to their religious and ethnic identities.

Join us at our workshop to address the following topics:

• Understanding Islamophobia, its consequences on the school environment and what to do about it.

• Addressing difficult questions about Islam and Muslims.

• What if you’re asked to present in your school, how do you do it, and what tools are available to you.

• What actions to take if you or your child is being teased, harassed, or bullied at school.

Middle school, High school and college students, as well as parents, will each explore these topics in separate age-appropriate groups as well as uniquely tailored plenary sessions.  Event is free of charge, but donations are welcome.

Speakers:

• Ameena Jandali: Understanding Islamophobia, Answers to difficult questions about Islam; What if you’re asked to present about Islam and Muslims

• Marcia Beauchamp: Religious Liberty: A civic framework for living with our deepest differences

• Michael Dittmer: What actions to take if you or your child is being teased, harassed, or bullied at school

• Kiran Palla: Steps towards building self-confidence in school
